A few years ago, I was involved with a non-profit organization for virtual professionals as one of the volunteers responsible for maintaining the website. We started small with just a handful of members and expanded into several hundred independent contractors providing administrative, creative and technical services from home. As our organization grew, our website needs changed so a decision was made to upgrade into a new weblog system called Geeklog. As a member of the Website Committee, I was tasked to teach other volunteers on how to use the system so they can help me manage our site. I willingly took on the task in spite of my lack of formal teaching experience. After all, how difficult is it to teach colleagues who are all computer savvy and comfortable in an online setting. Besides, I have taken several online professional development classes myself and could draw from my own experience as an online student. A couple of months later, I realized how naïve that notion was when I started spending most of my volunteer time troubleshooting website problems instead. I decided to take that frustrating experience as a challenge and enrolled in a program for online teachers at UC San Diego. Two semesters later, I received my Specialized Certificate in Teaching Online. It was just the tip of the iceberg for me. Going into the program, my goal was to learn how to help other volunteers in my organization. Coming out of it, my objectives shifted to finding ways to incorporate my new knowledge into my profession and explore a career as an instructional designer. Fully aware that it will require more learning on my part, I followed the suggestion of one of my classmates and researched the Educational Technology program at SDSU. That fall semester, I enrolled in EDTEC 541 and my journey began.
